Course Description

This course creates opportunities for graduate student writers to develop and shape meaningful and well-organized essay and responses to graduate-level assignments. The class objective is to introduce students to the practices, habits, conventions, and skills needed to write effective essays with minimum sentence-level errors. As the name implies, the course is not discipline-specific; rather, students are provided with general conventions for clear articulation in written English, which they can implement in subsequent courses where more representative academic writing is required. The goal is to train and prepare students to become stronger writers through individual and group work, collaborative discussion, drafting, revision, editing, and proofreading.
